Sign stealing is an unsportsmanlike practice in American football in which opponents surreptitiously identify hand signals that coaches use to communicate instructions with their team during the game. With the increase of no-huddle offenses, sign signals needed to be introduced among every team.
Teams that engage in sign-stealing have dedicated members who meticulously track the signs, take detailed notes, and closely observe the actions that follow the sign. This process allows them to gain an unfair advantage over their opponents.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association banned electronic equipment that can video-record signals that opponents use.
Not long ago, the latest scandal erupted regarding the sign stealing. In 2023, the NCAA opened an investigation into a potential sign-stealing scandal by the Michigan Wolverines football team staff members.
