Base-on-balls is a baseball term for when a pitcher throws four pitches to the batter at the plate, none of which are swung back, resulting in the hitter being awarded first base. Base-on-balls can be used as a statistic, measuring a pitcher’s eye and control – two skills widely recognized as important for a pitcher.
Both batter and pitcher know about a game called “intentional walk,” and the experienced hitter knows how to avoid it.
Pitchers avoid throwing at batters’ hittable pitches, trying to walk them intentionally. Hence, MLB’s superior hitters tend to earn a high number of walks because of their professionally trained eye to judge balls that are out of their strike zone.
