A point spread is a number set by the sportsbooks. It represents the public’s expectation of the match’s outcome or, more accurately, the expected difference in final scores.
The point spread is displayed as both a positive and negative number with the prefix + or -. So, what does the + and – mean in sports betting? The team that is expected to win is represented number with the prefix -, the underdog with the +, the number being the same for both teams, for it is the set margin of victory.
How Does A Point Spread Work?
For example, if the team is a two point favorite (-2), it means that they have to win the match against the other team by more than 2 points to win the bet. If the underdog wins by 1 (< +2) point or loses the game outright, they still cover the spread, and you win the bet.
