Joe Mazzulla Is a Psycho and We Love It – Meme Mondays #10

joe mazzulla

Today’s NBA has a ton of boring coaches, but one thing is certain: Joe Mazzulla isn’t one of them. While he’s undoubtedly proving to be a great coach and has already won a championship, he’s left another significant imprint.

Many NBA fans consider Joe to be, how do we put it subtly, a psycho. His direct answers, unorthodox approaches, and seemingly unhinged habits have made him a meme in the NBA community. So, in this week’s edition of Meme Mondays, we’ll highlight some of the most bonkers and hilarious moments Joe Mazzulla provided us with (so far).

The Town and Robbing Fenway

Joe Mazzulla’s love for Ben Afleck’s movie The Town has become a meme of its own. During his time as Celtics assistant, Joe would play The Town a few times per week while doing his post-game work. Along with The Dark Knight and Whiplash, this was his go-to choice that would help him get through his late-night work sessions.

While this is a bit unusual, it isn’t even the weirdest part. The movie had such an influence on the young coach that he often fantasized about heists and regularly quoted the movie.

In a recent podcast interview, he went a step further. He admitted that he recently went to Fenway and that he immediately started thinking about exit strategies. He said he thought he could probably get away with robbing Fenway and escaping without getting caught.

Now, most people who go to Fenway simply enjoy the games and indulge in overly expensive beer and food. But, staying true to what we can expect from him, Mazzulla thinks up the craziest things.

Living That Predator Lifestyle

Stepping it up a notch, Joe Mazzula reportedly showed predator-prey videos to his team before big games to show how they should bring their enemy to a standstill and dominate their opponents by working together as a team.

Most notably, he showed clips of killer whales working collectively to kill their prey and also played films of hyenas hunting down animals in a pack. Things like these only cement Joe’s reputation as a psycho coach and deepen the Celtics fans’ love for him. For us neutral observers, let’s just say we’re happy that he’s coaching a team with success instead of roaming the streets jobless.

Blocking Shots and Taking Names

Celtics fans love Mazzulla for the tenacity that he brings to the games. Many even jokingly suggest that he could suit up and give the team a few gritty minutes. And, to no surprise, we’ve seen Joe’s resolve on the court many times, such as this occasion when he tried to block Royce O’Neale:

What’s even more amusing is that Joe doesn’t only bring this mindset to games and against opponents. His own team has felt the intensity of the NBA’s most psycho coach in team practices. Here we can see the wild Joe Mazzulla specimen playing that Bad Boy Pistons defense in Celtics practice:

Considering that there are a few examples available to the public, we can only imagine how many other times Joe Mazzulla went ham in practice that, unfortunately, weren’t recorded for us to enjoy.

Of course, with the C’s winning their 18th NBA Championship in 2024, Mazzulla’s intense approach seems to be working. All we can hope is for his tenure in Boston to last so that his psychopathic mind can provide us with more gems.

Leicester Premier League Win Caps a True Cinderella Story – TBT #12

It’s 2015. Leicester City finished the 2014/15 Premier League season in 14th place and narrowly escaped relegation after winning 7 of their last nine games in the English top flight.

Then, in June 2015, during the summer tour in Thailand, three Leicester footballers, including the manager’s Pearson son, got involved in a sex scandal, and the club sacked them because of it. After the unfortunate event, Leicester also sacked manager Nigel Pearson.

In mid-July 2015, Claudio Ranieri joined the Foxes and the Greece’s national team fired him after suffering a devastating loss to the Faroe Islands. It’s safe to say that Leicester City fans weren’t delighted with the club and didn’t have high hopes as they awaited the 2015/16 season.

The odds for the Foxes to win the Premier League are 5000:1.

It’s August 8th, 2015, and Leicester City starts the 2015/16 Premier League campaign against Sunderland. The Foxes win the game 4-2 and are off to a great start.

After the season’s first ten games, they’re 5th on the table, and the fans can’t believe that their team is among the best teams in the Premier League. Fast forward to fixture No. 20, and Leicester City is 2nd on the table. They are battling with Arsenal, Tottenham, and City for the title. Then, in their 22nd game, Leicester is 1st on the table and looks to remain at the top.

From that moment on, for the next 13 games, the Foxes are first on the EPL table.  They could win the title if they beat Man United on May 1st. Unfortunately, Leicester draws 1-1 with United, and the PL trophy is not yet in their hands. However, they could win the title if Tottenham, which is in title contention, doesn’t win against Chelsea on May 2nd.

The match between Chelsea and Tottenham is underway. The first half ends 2-0 in Tottenham’s favor. In the 58th minute, Chelsea reduced the Spurs’ lead to 2-1. Then, in the 83rd minute, the Belgian midfielder Eden Hazard scores a stunning equalizer, and it’s 2-2. A couple of minutes later, the referee blows the whistle and signifies the end of the match.

The unthinkable happened. On May 2nd, 2016, the Leicester Premier League win went down in the books as the biggest underdog story in football history. This incredible team became the 2015/16 Premier League champions after numerous setbacks and unfortunate events. It’s a true Cinderella story that will unlikely happen again.

The Aguero Goal That Entered City Folklore – TBT #11

Aguero Goal

It’s May 13th, 2012. Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers collide in their last game of the season. City has the same number of points as their rivals Man United, but they’re 1st on the table thanks to goal difference. Nevertheless, they still have to match the result of Man United’s final match to win the title.

Meanwhile, QPR is one place above the relegation zone, and a draw against City would undoubtedly mean they’ll play in the Premier League next season.

Referee Mike Dean blows the whistle, and the match begins. The first half almost ends goalless, but City’s defender Pablo Zabaleta scores a goal in the 39th minute. The first half ends with 1-0 for City.

The second half is underway, and just three minutes after its start, Djibril Cisse puts the ball past Joe Hart. It’s 1-1. Then, in the 55th minute of the match, Joey Barton is sent off after kicking Aguero and trying to headbutt Kompany. QPR is down to ten men. In the 66th minute, Mackie scores a header for QPR, even though they have only ten men on the pitch. QPR leads 2-1.

The regulation time ends, and City must score two more goals to win the title. Mike Dean gives 5 minutes of extra time, so there’s still hope for Man City.

In the 2nd minute of extra time, City’s Edin Džeko scores a header, and it’s 2-2. The final moments of the match are approaching. Balotelli has the ball just outside QPR’s area and passes it to Aguero. The lighting-fast Argentinian feints one defender, and shoots the ball past Kenny and into the left corner of the net.

The crowd erupts into pandemonium when Aguero scored the goal that has won the Premier League title for Manchester City after 44 years. The Argentinian scored many goals for City, but this particular Aguero goal cemented his status as the club’s legend.
